Canada has four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. Temperatures and conditions differ from season to season in most parts of the country.

  GOVERNMENT IN CANADA
  How is Canada governed?
Canada is a federation. The federal system of the government means that powers and responsibilities are divided between the federal government and 10 Canadian provincial governments. Canada also has territorial jurisdiction in the far north of the country. The federal government includes the Prime Minister and the cabinet. Government members are members of the parliament. The Parliament buildings are located in Ottawa. The laws passed in Parliament are implemented by different federal departments.

  CANADA'S ECONOMY
Canada has a diversified economy. Resources industries such as forestry, mining, energy, agriculture and fishing are an important source of jobs and wealth. However, Canada is also recognized as a world leader in high technology areas such as communications. Canada's economy is responding to the challenge of global competition and changing needs. More and more jobs involve working with people and information. Service industries are increasingly important. Canada's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was $611 billion in 1995.

Major Exports: Automobile vehicles and parts, machinery and equipment, high-technology products, oil, natural gas, metals, and forest and farm products.

Major Imports: Machinery and industrial equipment, vehicles and automobile parts, industrial materials (metal ores, iron and steel, precious metals, chemicals, plastics, cotton, wool and other textiles), along with manufactured products and food

  SOCIAL SECURITY
Canada has a comprehensive social security network. Social security is provided through both federal and provincial programs. Many young families are entitled to the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB), which is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help them with the cost of raising children under the age of 18. The Old Age Security program is one of the cornerstones of Canada's retirement income system and provides a modest pension for people at age 65 if they have lived in Canada for at least 10 years.

  HEALTH CARE
Canada's health system is the responsibility of the provincial governments but the federal government also contributes funds. The health system is funded through taxes and residents don't have to "pay" directly for most of the health care services. Access to healthcare is guaranteed to all, however, most provinces will not cover newly landed migrants for the first three months, during which time private insurance should be taken.

  EDUCATION
Canada has excellent education network consisting of schools, colleges and universities, both government owned and privately owned. Colleges award Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelor degree and Post Graduation Diplomas. Universities award Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelor degree, Post Graduation Diplomas and Masters degree also. There are more than 1,000 courses available.
